One in...

"One in..." highlights the unacceptable statistic that one in four girls under the age of eighteen, one in six boys under the age of eighteen, and one in three women in their lifetime are sexually assaulted. If looked at carefully, inside the broken pieces, a manuscript statistic can be seen:

“1 in 6”   “1 in 4”   “1 in 3”

These statistics can only be revealed once the vessel have been broken. We do not know if the same statistic is etched inside any of the unbroken ceramic vases, because on the exterior they look pristine, but trauma is not always visible; however, it always leaves a lasting mark on the inside.

People who’ve experienced sexual trauma shouldn't have to be re-broken and forced to relive their trauma to “prove” what happened to them.

In this series, I hoped to keep a balance of representing controversial topics without participating in the romanticization of trauma. Sexual assault has been dismissed from conversations due to its “believability” or how it is uncomfortable to discuss, but in order to move forward we must be knowledgeable about the facts, statistics, and ways to prevent trauma. The denial of the validity of what is presented allows for the erasure of those who are more likely to be unheard, ignored, or without a voice.
